Tarkovsky is widely regarded as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, known for his poetic and philosophical approach to cinema. His films, which include “Ivan's Childhood”, “Andrei Rublev”, “Solaris”, “Mirror”, “Stalker”, “Nostalghia”, and "The Sacrifice," have influenced countless artists, writers, and filmmakers around the world. The famous Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman was quoted as saying: “Tarkovsky for me is the greatest [of us all], the one who invented a new language, true to the nature of film, as it captures life as a reflection, life as a dream.”
The OCHRE group, founded in 2019 and known for their innovative approach combining traditional Orthodox iconography with the modern artistic trends, will create a series of paintings to capture the poetic and spiritual themes of Tarkovsky's films, exploring his unique vision of the world and the human condition.
To complement the visual art, Natalia Karaseva will compose a series of original pieces inspired by Tarkovsky's films. Natalia's compositions often draw on the rich traditions of Eastern Orthodox church music, incorporating elements such as chant-like melodies, intricate counterpoint, and lush harmonies. At the same time, her work is also heavily influenced by the world of film scoring, with its emphasis on creating emotionally evocative music that tells a story.
"We are excited to continue our collaboration with Natalia Karaseva for this upcoming exhibition celebrating Andrei Tarkovsky," said His Grace Bishop Maxim Vasiljevic of the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the artist and the patron of the exhibition. "Tarkovsky's films have had a profound influence on our work, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase our art alongside the cinematic and soulful compositions by Natalia."
"Natalia and the OCHRE group previously collaborated on the exhibition "Saved by Beauty: A Visual Tribute to the 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Fyodor Dostoevsky" in 2022, which was held at the METS Arts Center in Athens, Greece, the Sheen Center in New York, NY, the Maliotis Cultural Center in Boston, MA, the Western American Diocese Alhambra in Los Angeles, CA, the Russian Center in San Francisco, CA, and the University Library "Svetozar Markovic" in Belgrade, Serbia.
